One of my earliest musical memories is of listening to the sounds of Devo, played constantly by my Male Parent when I was around two or three years old. The track that stands out for me is Jocko Homo, which to this day remains my favourite Devo song. So when I recently listened to Hardcore Devo Vol 1 74-77 all the memories came bouncing back. The tracks on this album are very raw but I think this adds to the beauty of the sounds. I've always been attracted to the image adopted by this band; the plant pot hats, the body bags, the potato heads; yet at the same time they made some outstanding music. Enjoy these early sounds:

LIL' BEETHOVEN UPDATE

By some strange coincidence I was browsing in Virgin Megastore this morning when I spied a copy of Lil' Beethoven (Deluxe Edition). I snapped it up at once. The Deluxe Edition contains three extra tracks, including an instrumental version of The Rhythm Thief, a bizarre short film entitled Fear of a Blank Page, and the video to The Rhythm Thief, which is an amazing treat. It's my pleasure to share it with you all:

Sparks - The Rhythm Thief [Video]

The Beautiful People are from Norway and they rawk big time. Their single Every Day is full of energy and a vicious rock beat that makes you want to bounce around the room. The band has a good look about them, a sweet set of beautiful boys, although I don't really find lipstick and stubble an attractive combination. As a bonus you can download the video to the single here - it's worth a look I reckon.

This morning I was listening to Lil 'Beethoven by Sparks. I have never heard a Sparks album that I have disliked, and I have practically heard all of them, I reckon. The sound is so distinctive, the Mael brothers tend to deliver the goods every time. Some of the tracks on Lil' Beethoven are slightly repetitive, they seem reminiscent of their roots making radio jingles, however the album is filled with the usual cool lyrics and splendid wit. As samples I have selected Ugly Guys With Beautiful Girls - just listen to the words - and Suburban Homeboy - 'I say yo to my pool cleaning guy' ... 'she's from the projects in St Tropez' ...  sweet!

Sparks - Suburban Homeboy

A bonus too... let's go right back to the early early days...

Sparks - Wonder Girl

band soft lucky jam video shoot photo 01

Another really excellent band is Soft. I can't stop listening to their single Droppin'. I keep telling myself to give someone else a chance, select a different track for a change, but I always seem to click on Droppin', I just can't resist it, it's like a bad addictive drug! Listening to them I can hear some Happy Mondays in there, especially the twiddly-twiddly guitar sound that appears to recur. I wonder when they are releasing an album? I wonder when they might visit West Yorkshire? On both counts I'll be glad when it happens.

Coming right up to the present day now, let me introduce you to Out Hud. If anyone is like me you'll arrive home from work wanting to listen to some sounds... what do you choose to hear first? With me it's always something current, something I've come across recently and just can't get enough of, because the sound blows my mind so much. Right now that track is Out Hud's It's For You. This is a real gem of a track to listen to, filled with an effervescent thrash-bang drum rhythm, cool girlie vocals, and even a tinkling piano cameo. Hey, it takes a lot to get this couch potato to jump up and bop, but It's For You does just that!

Inspiral Carpets arrived on the scene around 1990 with the album Life. On the shoulders of Happy Mondays and Stone Roses, all three bands hailing from Manchester, Inspiral Carpets created a distinctive style which featured the organs sound of Clint Boon and the nasal vocals of Tom Hingley. Here are a couple of tracks from Life:

This Is How It Feels  [Dead Link]

Sun Don't Shine

Plus a couple of later singles:

Dragging Me Down  [Dead Link]

Saturn 5  [Dead Link]

----------------------------------------------------------

3hive has introduced the superb Stereo Total to my listening pleasures. The band is from Belgium and they have an excellent sound. I Am Naked reminds me of early Devo. If you're into European sounds this might be your thing.

One of the first CDs I bought was Massive Luxury Overdose by Army of Lovers. I really liked the image of the band and the costumes and the music and the videos... everything about the band in fact. The one thing that sticks in my mind from that time is the video for Obsession. If you check out the website there are lots of videos available to watch so why not indulge yourself.
